1. Night plates, not megapixels

The useful test is simple: can a still from the clip show a UK number plate? In daylight most 1440p cameras can. After dark the sensor matters more than the 4K badge. Parking mode is the feature every listing shouts. Most of those listings still ship a lead that only lives with the ignition. When you lock the car, the camera dies. A bump in the supermarket at 4pm is then a story with no file.

A hardwire kit taps a permanent live, an ignition live, and earth, usually at the fuse box. It should include a low-voltage cutoff so the camera stops before the starter battery is too flat to turn the engine. Thinkware and BlackVue also sell battery packs. Those are the honest paths. A G-sensor clip saved on a capacitor as the camera dies is not parking mode.

3. What kind of parking mode

G-sensor only. The camera wakes on a bump. Fine for a hit. Blind to someone walking round the car.
Buffered event. A short rolling buffer is kept, so the clip includes the seconds before the hit. VIOFO publishes this on the A119 Mini 2 and A229 Pro.
Time-lapse. Saves card space. Weak if you need a plate at full resolution.
Radar. The camera sleeps until something moves in range. Thinkware builds this into the U3000 and sells it as a puck for the Q1000. That is how overnight watch lasts more than a few hours.
Cloud / LTE. Alerts leave the car. Useful if you want to look. Still needs a live supply, and a SIM on the BlackVue LTE model.

4. Front, rear, or both

Front-only is cheaper and easier to hide. It will not show a rear bump. Dual kits add a rear window camera on a cable through the headlining. Cabin cameras exist for ride-hail work; they are a privacy decision, not an evidence default for a private UK car.
