Parking mode
Parking mode and hardwire kits explained (UK)
Parking mode is the feature that keeps a dash cam able to record after you switch the engine off and lock the car. The catch is power. Most kits arrive with a cigarette-lighter lead that only works while the ignition is on. Once that socket goes dead, the camera stops — even if the menu still shows a parking-mode option.

What parking mode is trying to do
When the car is parked, you usually want a clip if someone bumps the bumper, opens a door into the bodywork, or walks around the vehicle in a way that triggers motion detection. Different manufacturers solve that in different ways: a G-sensor wake, buffered event recording, time-lapse, low-bitrate continuous recording, or radar that lets the camera sleep until something moves nearby.
Those modes only matter if the camera still has a live power supply after the ignition is off. Without that supply, the feature in the menu is not something you can rely on in a car park later.
Why a cigarette-lighter lead is not enough
On most UK cars and vans, the 12V socket used by the cigarette-lighter lead is switched with the ignition. When you lock the vehicle, power drops and the camera shuts down. A short emergency clip saved as power fails is not the same as parking mode that continues to monitor the car.
If you only ever plan to use the lead in the box, buy for driving footage and treat overnight parking coverage as out of scope. Do not choose a camera mainly because the box mentions parking mode unless you are also willing to hardwire it or fit a manufacturer battery pack.

What a hardwire kit actually connects
A typical three-wire hardwire kit connects to a permanent live fuse, an ignition-switched live fuse, and earth at the fuse box. The camera then knows when the engine is running and when the car is parked. A low-voltage cutoff should stop the camera before the starter battery is too flat to start the car in the morning.
Some brands also sell OBD-II cables or dedicated battery packs. Thinkware and BlackVue both publish battery-pack options as another honest way to keep power available without draining the starter battery as hard. Professional install is worth considering if you are not comfortable working at the fuse box.
Buffered parking versus a G-sensor wake
G-sensor modes wake the camera when they detect a bump. That can catch a hit, but it will miss someone walking around the car without striking it. Buffered event recording keeps a short rolling buffer, so the saved clip includes the seconds before the impact. On this site, VIOFO lists buffered auto-event parking on the A119 Mini 2 and the A229 Pro 2CH once the correct hardwire kit is fitted.
Time-lapse modes save card space, though they are weaker if you need a plate at full resolution. Radar modes let the camera stay mostly asleep until something moves nearby. Thinkware builds radar into the U3000 and sells it as an optional puck for the Q1000. That approach is how overnight monitoring can last longer without recording continuously at full power.
Hardwire kits named on cameras already reviewed here
Kit names are model-specific. Always check the manual for the camera you buy. On the published notes used for reviews on this site:
- VIOFO — HK4 (or later). The A229 Pro notes also list HK4 or HK6. Without that kit, buffered parking is not available in practice.
- Nextbase — a Nextbase hardwire kit into the Click&Go mount. Intelligent Parking Mode is the menu name; Nextbase manuals still require a permanently live supply for a reliable parking experience. See the 622GW Front + Rear review.
- Thinkware — Thinkware hardwire or OBD-II cable. Radar on the Q1000 is a separate module.
- 70mai — separate UP-series parking power modules on dual kits such as the A810S Front + Rear.
- BlackVue — Power Magic Pro or a battery pack on the DR970X-2CH LTE.
- Garmin — constant-power or parking-mode cable for Parking Guard on the Mini 3; some alerts also sit behind Garmin Vault.
How this ties to dual-channel reviews
Dual kits are often bought for car-park and reverse coverage while driving. Parking mode is the separate decision about what happens after you lock the vehicle. If you want both, budget for the hardwire kit (or battery pack) at the same time as the cameras. For van buyers who also need cab-height dual coverage, see best dash cam for a van UK. What this page is not
This is not a wiring tutorial, and it is not legal advice. Fuse taps, battery isolators, and insurance declarations are vehicle- and policy-specific. Spec grades on review pages remain grades from published specifications, not laboratory results from overnight installs we carried out ourselves. Read the method page for what letter grades mean.

Common questions
- Does parking mode work from the cigarette-lighter socket?
- Usually no. That socket loses power with the ignition on most UK vehicles, so the camera stops when you lock the car. Parking mode that keeps recording needs a hardwire kit or a dedicated battery pack, with a low-voltage cutoff so the starter battery can still start the car in the morning.
- What is buffered parking?
- Buffered event recording keeps a short rolling buffer in memory. When an impact or motion event is triggered, the saved clip includes the seconds before the event as well as the seconds after. VIOFO lists this on models such as the A119 Mini 2 and A229 Pro once a hardwire kit is fitted.
- Which hardwire kit do VIOFO cameras need?
- On the published notes for cameras reviewed on this site, VIOFO lists the HK4 or later kits (HK4 or HK6 on the A229 Pro). Always check the listing and manual for the exact model you buy — kit names change over time.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. This page explains how parking mode and hardwire kits work according to manufacturer specifications. It is not legal advice about filming in public, insurance discounts, or install rules for your vehicle.
